You’d be hard-pressed to find games that have such detailed side characters, especially for a niche market like yaoi VN games. They’re not just there to make Aoba seem less like a weird loner, but they have their own goals, thoughts, and quirks. You can definitely tell that each of the side characters is their own person. From what I know, even Mizuki gets more focus in DMmdrc. Compared to games where supporting characters don’t even have faces, I was blown away by the attention to detail in characters like Haga-san, Tae-san, and the three brats. Not only is there a good amount of side characters, but each of them also have a unique personality. Generally speaking, yaoi VN games have very few side characters who aren’t directly involved in the routes, but DMmd is different. I think the first thing I noticed was how well-developed the supporting characters of the game were. Instead of adhering to the usual, “no story, lots of mindless sex” trope, DMmd can be better described as, “What kind of story can we make that might contain some pretty good sex in it?” The sex is good, I won’t deny that, but I get the feeling that even then, the sex isn’t the main focus. Actually, most yaoi media can be summarized as, “How little story can we get away that incorporates the most amount of sex?” I wish I were kidding, but I’m not.īut see, that’s the thing about DMmd. I’m not saying that every yaoi manga/game/what-have-you out there sucks, but from what I’ve ever read or played, the trend is that the end-all goal is sex. I won’t say I’m an expert on yaoi VN games, since DMmd is literally my second yaoi game ever (the first one being Absolute Obedience), but I know enough about the yaoi/BL genre to claim adequate knowledge on the matter. But when I started playing it, I realized it was that and so much more. I didn’t know what to expect when I started playing DMmd, except that the art was gorgeous. I just wanted to share my first impressions. Do not read this if you have not finished this game! However, I have not played re:connect yet, so everything I say here is derived purely from only having played the first game. I will go through all the characters and routes, so expect major spoilers. Meta-post and analysis on DRAMAtical murder.
